For example, moving from the UK to the United States of America. When you’re preparing yourself to purchase a new property and live out of the UK, you’ll have to cancel your existing services and consider the services waiting for you in the US. This guide will help you to prepare this part of moving home to the US especially to Giles County.

Steps to Moving to the United States

E.ON customers

Cancelling E.ON Services

The first thing you’ll have to do is cancel your existing services with E.ON. Customers will have to contact E.ON customer services to cancel any of their existing services and you may be subject to cancellation fees, depending on the length of your contract and the fine print in the contract you signed.

One tip to canceling your E.ON services is to wait until the company experiences a price hike. At that time, there will be zero penalties for customers switching to another energy company or canceling their services altogether. Meaning that you will be able to get out of your contract without losing money to any additional fees.

It’s important to be prepared for the E.ON customer services representative as they will most likely attempt to keep you on as their customer but it’s important that you note how you will be moving to a different country. This should help to make the cancellation process quick and seamless.

Researching Energy Service Options in the US

Entergy logoOnce you’ve been able to get out of your existing energy company contract, it’s time to consider the energy options available to you in the US. Doing a sufficient amount of research is always the best way to make sure you’re prepared once you move into your home. There are independent companies that offer power throughout the United States, such as Entergy, but they all go through the same government organizations, both the Department of Energy and the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

You can easily find all of the information you’ll need about different power options through the Department of Energy’s website and this guide will go over the options available to you as well.

Considering Upfront and Overall Cost

When you’re selecting the right energy option for you, it’s important that you consider both the upfront and long-term costs associated with each option. As an example, solar powered vs. traditional electricity. Although it may cost you more money to have one type of energy installed in your home, it can help you to save a lot more over a long period of time. You’ll want to choose the most affordable and safest method for yourself and your family.

Energy Consumption in the United States

Energy is consumed by nearly everything in your home including water, appliances, electronics, lighting, heating, and cooling. There aren’t very many options available to you in terms of finding cheaper alternatives as you can basically choose between solar powered and traditionally powered homes. Though it is important to note that the United States government provides homeowners with an ample amount of information about how they can use energy saving technologies to reduce the amount of energy their homes consume on a regular basis.

Water: Water is responsible for using approximately 18% of the amount of energy your home uses. You can easily save on your monthly bills by using water-saving shower heads or reducing the amount of hot water used on a regular basis.

Appliances and Electronics: In the United States you’ll notice that the majority of appliances and electronics are equipped with an Energy Star rating. These ratings explain the amount of energy each of the items will use on a regular basis. You can easily purchase appliances and electronics that are built to reduce the amount of energy they need to work.

Lighting: Approximately 5% of your energy budget goes into lighting and for a low cost you can easily switch to more energy-efficient light bulbs. In fact, the average home that switches to Energy Star bulbs has the ability to save $75 per year simply by changing to more energy efficient bulbs.

Heating and Cooling: Much like water, 18% of your home’s energy bills are attributed to heating and cooling. You can take advantage of a wide variety of technologies that protect your home from costing you an exorbitant amount of money at the end of the year, such as thermostats and energy efficient ducts.

Energy Options in the United States

In the United States, there are two main types of energy that you can use to your advantage: traditional and solar powered.

Although traditional energy doesn’t require any upfront costs, you’ll find you’ll be spending far more money on a yearly basis than if you were to deal with the chore of having solar panels installed on your home.

One of the main reasons as to why homeowners decide to avoid solar panels is because of how much they cost at first, without considering the ample amount of savings they can take advantage of over the years. Also, with modernized technology solar panels are far more reliable now than they have ever been, allowing you to have access to power throughout the day and night. Many governments, especially the United States, give homeowners access to a credit that covers a large chunk of the cost associated with having solar panels installed.

With traditional energy, you don’t have to worry about hiring contractors to add solar panels to your home and many residents also find them to be unsightly. In the event that you’re not interested in taking advantage of clean energy, your home will be able to access energy from the day that you move in. You’ll be responsible for calling the energy company associated with your property and setting up an account.

Dealing with Energy Companies in the United States

Since there aren’t as many companies in the United States that offer energy like other places around the world, you won’t be able to take advantage of bartering for lower rates or threatening to leave their services in order to find a less expensive company. Instead, you’ll have to pay close attention to your bills and determine if you have any over payment credits that can be applied to future bills to offer savings throughout the year.

E.ON logoMoving from the UK to the US and talking to E.ON customer services to switch energy companies isn’t as difficult as you would think as every home, whether new or existing, is required to be connected to the municipal power grid. All you will have to do is contact your new energy company to set an account up in your name.
