Andrew
Johnston's son, Dr. Harvey Green Johnston, built this small
office to accommodate his medical practice around 1857. During
the Civil War, it was used as headquarters May 6-10, 1862 by
the 23rd Ohio Infantry Regiment. Two officers in this unit,
Maj. William McKinley and Col. Rutherford B. Hayes later became
presidents of the United States.
Following
the death of his father in 1881, Dr. Harvey Green Johnston
II (1875-1945) inherited the property. After his graduation
from the University College of Medicine in Richmond in 1899,
he carried on his practice in the small office from 1905-1945.
In
1993, the doctor's office was added to the Virginia Landmarks
Register and the National Register of Historic Places.
