January 9, 3:00pm
Annual Meeting.
Featured speaker is Doug Martin telling stories about Newport and its people. Changes to by-laws will be voted on at the business meeting prior to the speaker. Meeting is at The Palisades Restaurant, Eggleston.  High tea will be served ($15) during the meeting or you may choose to just come for the speaker, come early for brunch, or stay late for dinner at your own expense.  Please check our website, Facebook page, or call if the weather seems iffy.

Needle Beading Class.
With the Giles Arts Council. Taught by Cherie Creger of Wolf Creek Beads & Gallery in Narrows, students will create an Angle Bangle Bracelet.  Class will be held at the Historical Society.  Cost is $15 + discounted class supplies purchased at Wolf Creek Beads.  Pre-registration required.

Quilt Documentation Day.
An opportunity for Giles County residents to join in an ongoing quilt documentation project to preserve the legacy of quilts and quilt makers for future generations. Descriptions and photographs will be collected to record the history of the quilts and quilt makers from Pre-Colonial times to 1999. Appointments are required. July 9 & 16, 2:30 - 4:30pm
Beginning Leather Work Class.
With the Giles Arts Council. Taught by Holly Moore of Wild Rose Creations in Radford.  This class is 2 sessions long. Cost is $25 and includes supplies.  Class will be held at the Historical Society.  Pre-registration required.

July 28, 10:00am - 4:00pm
Civil War 150 Legacy Project.
Representatives from the Library of Virginia will be at the Historical Society to scan Civil War documents including letters, ledgers, diaries, maps, sketches, photographs, notices, and other papers to be included in the electronic archives at the Library of Virginia for use by researchers.  All scanning will take place at the Historical Society.  The documents will never leave your possession.  Call 921-1050 for an appointment and help make sure that Giles County's Civil War experiences are included in this historical record of the time!

August  12, 1:30-3:30pm and August 13, 2:30-4:30pm
Oak Split-Bottom Chair Class.
With Giles Arts Council. Taught by Ellen Woodyard and Sandy Hardymon. The class is 2 session long.  You must bring your own chair.  Class will be held at the Historical Society.  Cost is $25 and includes supplies.  Pre-registration required.

August 13, 1:00 - 4:00pm
Antique Appraisal Fair.
At the Pearisburg (Giles) Country Club. Wondering what some of those treasures in your attic are worth? Come have your antiques appraised by Robert Smith, Tony Williams, and Larry Clevinger of Valley Auction, LLC in Dublin.  Bring one item to be appraised for $10 or 3 for $25.  Limit 3 items.  This is a fundraiser for the Giles County Historical Society.

August 19, 1:30 - 3:00pm

September – November
Mystery at Mountain Lake.  An exhibit of artifacts discovered at the bottom of the lake in 2008, including an outline of the resulting investigation.  Main lobby, Mountain Lake Hotel, Pembroke, VA.  Daily through October, weekends in November.

September 2 & 9, 1:30 - 4:30pm
Nantucket Basket Class.
With the Giles Arts Council. Taught by Terry Nicholson.  This class is 2 sessions long.  Cost is $70 and includes supplies.  Class will be held at the Historical Society.  Pre-registration required.  Class is currently full, but still call to be put on a waiting list in case anyone cancels.

September 10, 8:00am - noon
Rummage Sale. We're counting on Historical Society members and friends to donate items explicitly for a rummage sale fund raiser for us.  Search your garage and attic for things you're ready to part with and bring them to the Historical Society on July 8th to be included in the Rummage Sale.  Then come back on July 9th and buy new treasures!  All proceeds go to a great cause!

September 25, 2 – 4 pm
“Mystery at Mountain Lake”.  An illustrated presentation by Investigator Mark Skidmore of the Giles County Sheriff’s Office on the human remains and artifacts found on the dried lake bottom in 2008.  An overview of the probe that led investigators back to the 1920’s.

October 21, 1:30 - 3:00pm

October 28 & 29, 9:30 - 3:30pm
Wool Rug Hooking Workshop. With the Giles Arts Council. Taught by Linda Woodbury, students will create a 14" x 14" hooked piece similar to a Rose of Sharon quilt square from colors of their choosing.  Cost of $95 includes linen, wool, and 2 full days of instruction. Students must provide their own 14" quilting hoop and a beginner medium size rug hook with handle.  Class will be held at the Historical Society. Pre-registration required.

November 3, 7:00pm
“Lost Communities of Virginia”.
  A talk by Terri Fisher, co-author of the book of the same name.  Virginia’s rural areas are dotted with traces of once-thriving communities.  Learn about how these communities – including several in Giles County -- are struggling to survive or rebuilding themselves in a new and different way.

November 6, 2:00pm POSTPONED
Glass Blowing 101: Make Your Own Ornament Ball.
With the Giles Arts Council. Taught by glass artist, Parker Stafford.  Class will be held at Stafford Art Glass in Newport. 

November 18, 1:30 - 3:30pm

December 3, 3:00-6:00 pm
A Civil War Christmas by Candlelight” at the Andrew Johnston House. Meet Dr. Harvey Green Johnston, his young wife Annie and their friends as they gather on Christmas Eve, 1861. Enjoy period music and refreshments, Victorian Christmas decorations, and listen to the carolers of the Giles High School Choral Ensemble.  Afterwards, view the new exhibit “The Civil War in Giles County” at the Historical Museum.
